An animal rights group is calling for the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association to stop using bucking straps after a bull had to be destroyed last week during the National Finals Rodeo.

ASHEBORO - The more than 1,000-pound, yellow-tinted polar bear sniffed the air and his new surroundings as he cautiously walked on the rock surface into his new outdoor habitat at the N.C. Zoo.

On Thursday, for the first time since he was an infant at the Copenhagen, Denmark, Zoo where he was born, Willhelm had access to a large pool of water.

While a critically injured zookeeper needed help from a ventilator to breathe on Monday, Flora the elephant socialized, ate umbrella tree leaves and rested in the shade at Miami Metrozoo where she had attacked her handler a day earlier, oblivious to the controversy she had sparked over how the zoo treats elephants.
