Honk if You Hate Foie Gras
My friend Arthur considers himself a sophisticate, especially when it comes to food. The subject came up recently as an antidote to the soggy sandwiches we had grabbed for lunch one day. I nodded blankly as he rattled on about the pleasures of cinnabar chanterelles, morels and other wild fungi, but when he switched to the subject of pâté de foie gras, I jolted back to attention.

Bicyclist from Seattle pickets KFC restaurant in Heights
Wearing a rooster's comb on her helmet and peddling a message, Rachel Bjork rode to the KFC restaurant on Main Street Wednesday.
Bjork, a PETA member and strict vegetarian, picketed the restaurant to protest what she characterized as the inhumane treatment of chickens sold to KFC, the fast-food franchise formerly known as Kentucky Fried Chicken.
Reconsider your order at a restaurant near you
YALE UNIVERSITY - I was recently shocked to discover that several New Haven area restaurants such as Zinc, Roomba, the Union League Cafe, and the Central Steak House, feature foie gras on their menus either as standard entrees or on their lists of specials. Foie gras is a French term meaning "fatty liver." Its production involves force-feeding ducks and geese to induce them to develop hepatic lipidosis or more simply, "fatty liver disease."

ASHEVILLE - Road race organizers around Western North Carolina shouldn't take offense that Haywood County runner Charlie Dotson recycles most of the age-group plaques and trophies he wins.
Dotson, who'll compete in Saturday's fourth annual Citizen- Times Half Marathon one month shy of his 81st birthday, simply doesn't have room for all the pewter and gold plastic inside his brick home in Lake Junaluska.
